Spray Foam Insulation in Shawnee

Last updated March 2026

Where Shawnee Homes Lose Energy

Attics, rim joists, and crawl spaces are the three worst energy leaks in Shawnee homes. In the Monticello and Trail Ridge areas, a lot of houses are still running on original insulation that is 40+ years old and never worked very well to begin with.

When I climb into Shawnee attics, I see the same story over and over. Fiberglass batts laid down decades ago, now slumped, shifted, and sliced up by every electrician and HVAC tech who's been up there. Pieces pulled back and never replaced. Bare spots you can see the drywall through. Thin coverage around can lights and along the eaves. It is like wearing a winter coat with the zipper open and half the buttons missing. Technically “insulated,” but the heat is going right out of the house.

The rim joist — where the top of the foundation meets the bottom of the house framing — is almost never insulated correctly in older Shawnee homes. That band of wood runs all the way around the perimeter, full of seams, plumbing penetrations, and little gaps where cold air pours in during winter and humid air sneaks in during summer. We spray closed-cell foam directly on that rim and seal every crack and gap in one pass. Drafts stop, floors feel warmer, and the musty smell along the baseboards goes away.

The Right Foam for Each Part of Your Shawnee Home

We match the foam to the job. Open-cell foam in the attic for high R-value and sound control. Closed-cell foam on rim joists and crawl space walls for moisture resistance and air sealing. Both types adhere right to the wood, block air movement, and do not sag or settle like loose fiberglass or cellulose.

Homes in the Mill Creek area that fight crawl space moisture are a good example. Closed-cell foam on the crawl space walls insulates and creates a vapor barrier at the same time. When we pair that with full encapsulation — heavy vapor barrier on the floor, vents sealed, and a dehumidifier set to hold things in the 50–55% range — the entire lower level is dry, conditioned, and no longer feeding damp air up into the living space.

Energy savings are not theoretical. When the attic, rim joists, and crawl space are sealed correctly, the furnace and air conditioner simply do not run as much. Shawnee homeowners we work with regularly report noticeably lower heating bills the first winter after spray foam, and the same story on cooling in July and August. The house is quieter, more comfortable, and holds temperature instead of fighting the Kansas wind all day long.
