When Should You Waterproof Your Basement? A KC Contractor's Take

Last updated April 2026

Most homeowners call us in spring after water gets in. That's understandable — but fall is actually the best time to waterproof a Kansas City basement. Here's why, and what to watch for before you reach that point.

Best Time of Year: September Through Mid-November

The ground is still workable, the summer heat has backed off, and you get the system installed before winter freeze-thaw cycles and spring rains put your basement to the test.

Warning Signs You Shouldn't Ignore

  • Water stains on basement walls or floors — even old ones
  • White mineral deposits (efflorescence) on concrete or block
  • Musty smell, especially after rain
  • Visible moisture or condensation on walls
  • Peeling paint or damp drywall at the base of basement walls
  • Any actual water pooling after rain — even a small amount

Interior Waterproofing: What's Actually Involved

For most Kansas City basements, interior waterproofing is the practical answer. We cut a narrow channel around the perimeter, install drain tile that captures water at the wall-floor joint, and route everything to a sump pit with a pump. The floor is repaired with new concrete. Most jobs take 1-2 days.

If you're seeing any of those warning signs, call us before spring. (913) 270-0250 — free inspection, same-day estimate, no pressure.
